The 5 Core Technical Controls.
The Cyber Essentials scheme focuses on five fundamental technical areas designed to prevent the most common internet-borne threats.
1. Firewalls
Ensure that all devices connecting to the internet are protected by correctly configured firewalls to create a buffer zone between your IT network and external threats.
2. Secure Configuration
Removing default passwords, disabling unnecessary accounts, and ensuring computers and network devices are configured to reduce vulnerabilities.
3. User Access Control
Restricting administrative privileges to only those who strictly need them, and ensuring robust password policies or multi-factor authentication (MFA) are enforced.
4. Malware Protection
Deploying and keeping anti-malware software up to date on all devices, and ensuring strict application whitelisting and sandboxing where appropriate.
5. Patch Management
Ensuring that all operating systems and third-party software are kept up to date, and that critical security patches are applied within 14 days of release.
